pH measurement of the esophagus – examination of acid reflux
In cases of established reflux disease, or suspected reflux where gastroscopy has not given a clear answer – or if medical treatment has not had the desired effect – a 24-hour pH measurement of the esophagus can be a useful examination. This is especially true when the diagnosis is still unclear after gastroscopy or you have a lack of effect from the treatment implemented.
What is pH measurement and how is it carried out at Medicus?
pH measurement is a test that records the acid level in the esophagus over a period of 24 hours. At Medicus, we perform a gastroscopy in the same session to get an updated overview of the esophagus and to obtain the necessary information and measurements to be able to perform an optimal examination. As an extension of the gastroscopy, a small pH capsule is attached to the lower part of the esophagus. This means that you do not have to wear a probe in your nose during the examination period, as is necessary with conventional equipment.
- A small pH capsule is placed in the esophagus during gastroscopy. The procedure takes about 4-5 minutes.
- An external recording device that records episodes of reflux and registers when you have symptoms using a button on the recording device
Who should take a pH measurement?
pH measurement may be recommended if you:
- Has persistent heartburn or acid reflux that does not improve with medication.
- Experiencing chest pain that may be due to acid reflux but where no findings have been revealed by gastroscopy
- Have symptoms such as cough, hoarseness, and suspected laryngopharyngeal reflux
- Should be evaluated for anti-reflux surgery
What to expect?
1. Before the examination
You will be given instructions to avoid certain medications and foods that may affect the result.
2. During the examination
- A gastroscopy is first performed to obtain an updated overview of the esophagus and to obtain the necessary information and measurements to be able to perform an optimal examination.
- As an extension of the gastroscopy, a small pH capsule is attached to the lower part of the esophagus. This eliminates the need to wear a probe in your nose throughout the examination period, as is required with conventional equipment.
3. After the examination
- The capsule passes naturally out of the body.
- The results are analyzed to map the connection between acid reflux and your symptoms.
- The doctor will provide you with a detailed report and recommendations for further treatment.
