What is 3D/4D ultrasound?
What distinguishes 3D ultrasound from regular 2D is that you get a more realistic image of the fetus by getting a depth representation. With 4D ultrasound, you can also see the movements of the little one in the belly.
When can a 3D ultrasound be performed?
From weeks 26-32 is the best time to perform a 3D ultrasound, but the conditions are not always optimal to get a good result. This depends on how the fetus is positioned in the abdomen and the amount of amniotic fluid. If the arms and legs and perhaps also the umbilical cord are in front of the face, it can be difficult to get good images.
A 3D ultrasound examination will still provide a lot of information. Growth is measured, the amount of amniotic fluid is assessed, and you can see how the baby is positioned inside the uterus.
