Frequently Asked Questions
You may be wondering…
Here are the questions we most often get about PCOS.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book an appointment with our gynecologists directly, without a referral from your GP.
How is PCOS diagnosed?
The examination consists of a review of your history, hormone tests and an ultrasound of the ovaries. If necessary, the gynecologists also perform a hair score, referred to as the Ferriman-Gallway-Score. This examination evaluates any excess hair growth (hirsutism) on the body. The diagnosis is made when at least two of three criteria are met: irregular menstrual cycles, elevated male hormones, or typical PCOS ovaries on ultrasound – and that other causes have been ruled out.
Does PCOS affect the ability to get pregnant?
Yes, PCOS can cause ovulation disorders that make it more difficult to get pregnant. Treatment is tailored to the individual, with the goal of both increasing the chance of pregnancy and reducing the risks during pregnancy. In some cases, IVF treatment may be necessary.
Do I have to stop taking birth control pills before the examination?
Yes, hormone tests must be taken after at least three months without birth control pills for the results to be reliable.
What treatments are available for PCOS?
Treatment depends on whether you want to get pregnant. Regardless, it is about reducing symptoms and risks to future health, and is tailored individually based on your symptoms.
