What is gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is an examination in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera (gastroscope) is passed through the mouth and into the digestive tract. The examination is used to:
- Identify inflammation or ulcers in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum.
- Investigate causes of heartburn, nausea, or vomiting.
- Find bleeding or polyps.
- Take tissue samples (biopsies) if further analysis is needed.
Who should have a gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is recommended if you experience:
- Persistent heartburn or acid reflux.
- Abdominal pain or discomfort after meals.
- Nausea or vomiting without a known cause.
- Blood in vomit or black stools (signs of bleeding).
- Problems swallowing food or drinks.
- If underlying disease is suspected on blood tests
What to expect?

1. Before the examination
You will receive detailed preparation instructions, such as fasting for a few hours before the examination and in some cases, stopping medications before the examination, such as blood thinners.

2. During the examination
- The procedure itself usually takes 3-5 minutes.
- Around 90% of gastroscopies performed in 2024 were performed with local anesthesia, if you need medication into your veins, you will of course receive this.

3. After the examination
- The doctor will immediately explain the findings and make a further plan.
- Any further follow-up or treatment will be agreed upon based on the results.
