Chronic urinary tract infection
— investigation in Oslo and Trondheim.

Both women and men suffer from repeated urinary tract infections without a good explanation as to why. We look for underlying causes and create a plan to break the pattern — not just treat individual infections.

No referral necessary · Oslo and Trondheim

Who is this suitable for?

Do you recognise your self?

An investigation is appropriate if you experience:

Three or more urinary tract infections in the past 12 months
Two or more infections in the past six months
Infections that do not respond well to antibiotics
Symptoms that return quickly after treatment
Uncertainty about why the infections keep coming back

Common causes

Common causes of chronic urinary tract infection

Anatomical conditions

Shorter urethras in women make it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. In some people, structural conditions in the urinary tract can make infections more difficult to avoid.

Hormonal changes

Lower estrogen levels after menopause make the lining of the urinary tract thinner and more vulnerable to bacteria. This is a common and treatable cause of recurrent infections.

Bacteria that are hard to get rid of

Some strains of bacteria stick to the bladder wall and form biofilms, which make them resistant to antibiotics. A regular urine test does not always detect this.

Impaired immune system

Conditions or medications that affect the immune system can reduce the body's ability to fight bacteria in the urinary tract. A thorough evaluation will reveal whether this may be the case.

Hygiene factors

Hygiene routines in the intimate area can both prevent and trigger urinary tract infections. Factors such as toilet habits, choice of underwear and sexual activity can affect the risk and should be considered as part of the assessment.

Incomplete bladder emptying

If the bladder is not completely emptied during urination, residual urine can become a breeding ground for bacteria. This may be due to anatomical conditions, muscle weakness, or other underlying causes that the urologist will investigate further.

How it works

How the investigation is carried out

1

Medical history conversation

We map the frequency of infections, response to treatment and any triggering factors. A thorough medical history is essential to find the cause.

2

Examination

The investigation may include urine culture, blood tests, ultrasound of the urinary tract and cystoscopy, depending on the symptoms.

3

treatment Plan

Treatment is directed at the cause. This may include prophylactic antibiotic treatment, hormone supplementation, or other measures tailored to you.
