What to expect

What happens during an egg retrieval?

During egg retrieval, mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a thin needle, guided by ultrasound. The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes. Most people do well with painkillers and sedatives. However, some people experience discomfort or pain during the procedure.

What most people experience

With painkillers and sedatives as standard, most people go through the egg retrieval without any major discomfort. The experience varies – some feel little, others feel more.

The choice is yours.

Everyone receives painkillers and sedatives as standard. If you would like deep sedation, we will consider this with you.

Safe follow-up

No matter which solution you choose, qualified personnel are present throughout the entire procedure.

Deep sedation

When might deep sedation be appropriate?

Deep sedation may be appropriate if you wish to sleep through the procedure, or have experiences that make it difficult to perform the procedure while awake.

May apply if you

· Have experienced severe pain during previous egg retrievals

· Has expressed anxiety related to the procedure

· Have traumatic experiences that make it difficult to carry out wakefulness

· For other reasons, want to sleep through the procedure

Under deep sedation

You sleep throughout the entire procedure

· You are not conscious and will not experience any discomfort

· You will not remember anything from the procedure

· Pulse, oxygen saturation and blood pressure are continuously monitored

Sedation is administered and monitored by qualified anesthesia personnel. The choice is always made in consultation with a doctor based on your situation and medical history.

Our approach

This is how we assess what is right for you.

Conversation with a doctor

We will review the options for painkillers and sedatives. The best choice for you will be made in consultation with your doctor. You must let us know well in advance of the egg retrieval that you would like deep sedation so that we can arrange for it.

Anesthesiologist assesses

In the case of deep sedation, the anesthesiologist will conduct an independent assessment to ensure that it is carried out safely. You will receive a form from us, which you must fill out with the correct information and send back to us for assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions we often get.

?

Is egg retrieval painful?

It varies. Some feel little, others experience more discomfort. Standard pain relief and sedative medications reduce this for most people. Deep sedation is available for those who wish it.

?

Is deep sedation the same as general anesthesia?

Not quite. The same type of drugs are often used, but in a lower dose. You breathe on your own during the entire procedure and are continuously monitored by anesthesia personnel. A breathing machine is used for anesthesia.

?

Can I drive myself home after deep sedation?

No. You must have someone with you who can drive you home, and you should not drive for the rest of the day.

?

Can I choose deep sedation without previous problems?

Yes, if it is medically appropriate. An assessment by the anesthesiologist must always be made in advance before we can offer deep sedation during egg retrieval.

?

Do you offer deep sedation at all clinics?

We currently offer sedation at our clinics in Trondheim and Oslo. Not in Stavanger and Bergen.

?

Does it require any preparation?

Deep sedation requires that you fast beforehand and that you have someone with you to drive you home. You should not drive yourself on the day of the procedure.
