Our experienced neurologist has specialized expertise in epilepsy and extensive experience in differentiating epilepsy from other conditions that can cause seizures. At Medicus, we understand how important it is to get an accurate diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan, giving you the peace of mind and quality of life you need.
What is epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain and leads to repeated seizures. A seizure occurs when there is a sudden, synchronous and intense electrical activity in the brain. Depending on where in the brain the abnormal activity occurs, the seizures can manifest themselves in many different ways. Epilepsy is a chronic condition, which also includes psychosocial aspects, which together require accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment.
Symptoms of epilepsy
Symptoms of epilepsy can range from temporary confusion and seizures to loss of consciousness. Epilepsy affects people of all ages, and symptoms can vary significantly from person to person.
Investigation of epilepsy
The first step towards effective treatment of epilepsy is a thorough and accurate diagnostic assessment. A detailed description of the seizures from the patient and relatives provides important information, and we also perform a thorough neurological examination during the consultation. It is often necessary to perform further examinations such as EEG (electroencephalography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
If these examinations have been done in advance, it is appropriate and effective if these are sent to us before the consultation with the neurologist.
Treatment of epilepsy
Every patient is unique, and so is epilepsy treatment. At Medicus, we tailor treatment to you, your type of epilepsy, and your specific needs. We work closely with you to find the right balance between medical treatment and other interventions that can help reduce seizures and improve your quality of life. Our goal is to help you live as normal, safe, and active a life as possible.
If you have lost your driver's license as a result of an epileptic seizure, our neurologist can also assist you with a driver's license assessment.
