Back pain

Back pain is a common health problem that can affect both everyday life and quality of life. The causes of the pain can vary from musculoskeletal problems to neurological conditions such as herniated discs and sciatica. Here you will get an overview of common causes and when it may be necessary to see a neurologist for a more thorough examination and treatment of your complaints.

What is back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints and a major cause of disability. The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that interferes with everyday life. Back pain can occur acutely, often as a result of injury or strain, or develop gradually over time.

Causes of back pain

Back pain can be caused by a variety of different things. Some of the most common reasons why the pain occurs are:

Conditions such as sciatica, where a nerve becomes pinched or irritated, can cause pain that radiates from the back down the legs. This can occur with some types of herniated discs that pinch nerves, or with nerve compression caused by other factors in the back.

Accident

Physical injuries, such as sprains or fractures, can lead to acute back pain.

Evaluation of back pain

In such cases, prompt and thorough medical evaluation is necessary, for example via an emergency room. Other types of back pain can be overlooked and a GP can often be consulted.

If you have symptoms of pinched nerves/radiating pain from your back to an arm or leg, our experienced neurologist can assess your back pain. This may also be relevant if the pain persists over time.

Treatment of back pain

Treatment for back pain depends on the cause of the pain. Often, moderate physical activity is important to improve back pain, sometimes with the help of painkillers. In severe cases, such as a herniated disc that severely pinches a nerve, surgery may be necessary to relieve back pain.
