Micro-TESE is an advanced surgical procedure to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles of men who have no sperm in their semen sample (azoospermia). The purpose is to find usable sperm that can be used in fertility treatment.

Who is this suitable for?
Azoospermia means there are no sperm in the semen sample. For these men, Micro-TESE is an option – a procedure that looks for sperm directly in the testicle using a micro-surgical technique.
The patient has been fully evaluated with hormone tests and genetic tests, and assessed by a fertility specialist.
No sperm cells are found in the semen sample. Micro-TESE is the next step to attempt to find sperm directly from the testicle.
For some patients, hormonal optimization is recommended in advance – typically over approximately 3 months – before the procedure is performed.
Patient course
Micro-TESE is a day surgery procedure. Here is how the process works:
Step 1
Clinical assessment, blood tests and genetic testing. Possible hormonal optimization in advance if indicated.
Step 2
The procedure is performed as a day surgery with sedation and local anesthesia. A companion is required and you should expect to spend a few hours at the clinic.
Step 3
Mild pain and swelling are common for a few days. Painkillers and supportive underwear are recommended. Our nurses will give you specific instructions for the period after the procedure.
Step 4
The tissue is immediately analyzed by our laboratory. Any sperm cells are frozen and can be used for IVF/ICSI at a later date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and sedation. Afterwards, you may experience mild to moderate pain for a few days, which is relieved with painkillers and supportive underwear.
Do I need to be admitted for the procedure?
No, Micro-TESE is a day surgery. You will go home the same day. You will need to have a companion with you due to sedation during the procedure, and you should set aside a few hours for your visit.
How long is the recovery time?
Most people are back to normal after a few days, but should take it easy for about 1 week. If you work in an office, you are often back to work after 2-3 days. Physical work may require a little longer. Sick leave is possible if necessary.
Is there a risk of complications?
As with all procedures, there are risks, but they are generally low. The most common are temporary swelling, bruising and pain. Permanent complications are very rare (less than 2%).
What are the chances of finding sperm?
It varies between patients, and the doctor will always make an assessment of what is best for you. There is no guarantee of finding sperm, but according to published literature, the chance of finding sperm is higher with Microthesis than with traditional TESE, in addition to it being a more gentle surgical procedure than traditional TESE. What if you can't find sperm?
It is not always possible to find sperm. If the procedure is unsuccessful, your doctor will discuss other options with you – including using donor sperm.
