Stomach pain – when should you seek help?

Stomach pain can range from mild discomfort to intense pain that affects your daily life. While many cases are harmless and temporary, recurring or persistent pain may be a sign of an underlying condition that requires treatment.

At Medicus, we offer a thorough examination to find the cause of your stomach pain and help you with the right treatment.

Common causes of stomach pain

  • Inflammations: Conditions such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can cause pain and irregular bowel movements.
  • Ulcer: Pain that is often located in the upper abdomen and may get worse after meals.
  • Gallbladder problems: Pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, often triggered by fatty foods.
  • Intestinal obstruction or constipation: Often causes cramps and discomfort in the stomach.
  • Food intolerances: For example, lactose intolerance can cause pain and bloating.

When should you seek help?

You should seek help if:

  • The pain is intense or persistent.
  • You experience weight loss, fever, or blood in your stool.
  • The stomach pain is accompanied by nausea or vomiting.
  • The pain worsens after meals or lasts for a long time.
