Artificial insemination (assisted insemination) in Norway
Assisted reproduction (formerly often referred to as artificial insemination) is the name of two methods that we can help those of you who are struggling to get pregnant. These two methods are:
- test tube treatment
- insemination treatment
In vitro fertilization (often referred to as IVF) is a method in which the woman is stimulated with hormones so that she produces more eggs. The eggs are retrieved and fertilized in the laboratory. After a few days, a fertilized and divided egg (embryo) is returned to the uterus. If the man has severely reduced sperm quality, we use a fertilization method called microinjection (often referred to as ICSI). In this case, we give the sperm a little extra help by injecting it directly into the egg.
Insemination treatment is a simpler form of treatment that we use if the man's sperm quality is normal and the woman's fallopian tubes are open or there are two women. Here, purified sperm is introduced into the uterus using a thin and soft catheter.
We often get several fertilized and divided eggs (embryos) of good quality with assisted/artificial fertilization. We normally put one back, while the rest are frozen. These we can thaw and put back in a later natural or lightly stimulated cycle. This is called FER (frozen thawed embryo retrieval).
