Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition and affects 5-20% of the population. The symptoms are usually abdominal pain, alternating bowel patterns and bloating, but the severity varies greatly. At Medicus you will receive a comprehensive assessment and follow-up by experienced specialists.

What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

IBS is a functional bowel disorder that affects how the intestines work. Although the condition is not dangerous, it can cause significant symptoms such as:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort.
  • Bloating.
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or an alternation between the two.
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying after defecation.

Symptoms vary from person to person and can be worsened by stress, diet, or hormonal changes.

Many people also experience symptoms that are not related to the gastrointestinal tract. These can include fatigue, headaches, musculoskeletal pain, and depression.

Causes of IBS

Causative factors include changes in intestinal motility, sensitivity and retention of intestinal gas, as well as psychosocial factors. Many people experience a worsening for a longer period of time after gastrointestinal infection and immune activation. In addition, genetic predisposition, changes in the intestinal bacterial flora and communication between the brain and the gut are likely causal factors.
