2. When can you actually get pregnant? Have sex at the right time
Many people believe that having sex frequently increases the likelihood of getting pregnant. However, the truth is that a woman can only be fertilized for a few days during a cycle. Getting pregnant is about quality, not quantity – it’s about having sex at the right time, namely around ovulation.
When a woman ovulates, one or more mature eggs are released from the ovaries. The egg must be fertilized within a day, while sperm can live in the fallopian tube and be fertile for several days. The best timing for getting pregnant is therefore to have intercourse before ovulation itself.
3. Find out when you ovulate
Some women feel it on their bodies when they ovulate. Others feel nothing. An ovulation test is therefore a useful tool for finding the right time to get pregnant. An ovulation test is done with urine on a strip, in a similar way to a pregnancy test. The woman takes the test in the bathroom at home on the days when ovulation is most likely to occur, about 12-14 days before the expected period. Morning urine gives the clearest answer to an ovulation test. Hormone levels are measured, and the test gives an answer whether ovulation is underway.
There are a number of different ovulation tests available – some of better quality than others. Those that show smiley faces are easiest to interpret, while those that show lines sometimes give ambiguous answers.
4. Temping - Get to know your body temperature throughout your cycle
Tracking your temperature throughout your cycle is another tool that can help you get to know your cycle and find the right time to get pregnant. Use a regular thermometer to take your temperature before you get up each morning. Your temperature usually rises 0,5 degrees when you ovulate.
Temperature measurement throughout the cycle can help you determine whether a woman is not ovulating, or whether the phase after ovulation and before menstruation is long enough for the egg to implant. Usually this phase lasts 12 days, but for some it is shorter. The phase should be at least 10 days long.
Please note that the temperature of the cycle cannot be used to plan intercourse, because the body temperature first increases by ovulation.
