Sperm extraction
What is sperm extraction?
Sperm extraction is a small operation to remove or extract sperm from the testicles or the epididymis, and use them to fertilize eggs. The operation is usually not painful and is done under local anesthesia. The man arrives for an appointment in the morning, and the operation takes only 5 – 10 minutes.
When to use sperm extraction?
Azoospermia is a condition we experience in about 10 – 15 of all men who come to Medicus for infertility. Sperm is not found in their sperm sample. When sperm is absent, the patient can choose to take a new sperm sample, and if it also shows no sperm, two explanations are likely:
- It can be normal sperm production in the testes, but some obstruction is preventing the sperm from entering the sperm sample. This may come from infection or by sterilization.
- There may be very little or no production of sperm in the testes.
Different types of operations
There are different types of this operation. They include PESE, PESA, TESE and TESA. The method we have the best experience with is TESE. If we find sperm, we can do trial treatment with microinjection (ICSI). If we do not find sperm, we will discuss with you other possible alternatives, such as donor sperm or adoption.
These operations are simple and straightforward and are usually not painful. However, we recommend you do not work the day of the procedure since local anesthesia will be given putting you in a relaxed state. Usually. you can return to work the next day.
