Operative sperm retrieval

What is operative sperm retrieval?

Operative sperm retrieval is a small operation to extract sperm from the testicles or epididymis and use them in in vitro fertilization. This operation is usually not painful and is done under local anesthesia. The man then comes in fasting in the morning, and the operation does not need to take more than about 5 – 10 minutes.

When is operative sperm retrieval used?

Azoospermia is a condition that we experience in about 10 – 15% of all men who come for an infertility evaluation. This means that we do not find sperm in the semen sample. When we do not see sperm, you can choose to take a new semen sample, and if it also shows no sperm, there are two explanations for this:

  • There may be normal sperm production in the testicles, but something is blocking the sperm ducts. This can be caused by infection or sterilization.
  • There may be very little or no production of sperm in the testicles.

Different types of operations

There are different types of this operation. They are called PESE, PESA, TESE and TESA. The method we have the most experience with is TESE. If we find sperm cells, we can do in vitro fertilization with microinjection (ICSI)If we cannot find sperm, we will inform you about other possible options such as: donor or adoption.

These operations are simple and straightforward operations that are usually not painful. However, we recommend that you do not work on the day of the procedure as local anesthesia and something relaxing is given. The next day the man can usually go to work as usual.
