Insemination (IUI)
What is insemination?
In Norway, we have two forms of assisted reproduction: Insemination (IUI), which means that the woman has sperm inserted into the vagina, and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Through fertility check We'll find out which one is right for you, but we usually recommend IVF for heterosexual couples and donor insemination for lesbians.
Who is insemination for?
Insemination is a simple treatment method that we can use when
- the couple are two women
- you are a single woman
- we do not see an explicable reason for the failure to become pregnant
- For various reasons, it is difficult for sperm cells to enter the uterine cavity.
- the man, for various reasons, cannot ejaculate into the woman's vagina
Our donor sperm comes from Denmark. We do the practicalities, but you are involved in the process.

How is insemination treatment performed?
Some women will need stimulation with medication to ensure egg development and ovulation. In cases where this is not necessary, we perform the insemination in a natural cycle. We assess each individual case whether this is necessary.

1. Ultrasound examination

2. Ovulation
It is important that the insemination takes place at the right time: During ovulation. So when the egg sac is the right size, the woman is told when she can start ovulation tests at home (testing LH levels in urine) – or when she should use an ovulation injection, if needed. If we see that more than three egg sacs are developing, we interrupt the treatment or switch to IVF. This is to avoid multiple pregnancies.

3. The sperm is inseminated
Before insemination, we clean the sperm to make it as concentrated as possible. Then it is inseminated into the woman's uterus using a thin catheter. It is done in a few minutes, is simple and painless. Then fertilization occurs naturally in the woman's body.

4. Time for a pregnancy test
14 days after insemination, you will receive an answer as to whether the treatment was successful, either by means of a home pregnancy test or a blood test that we will order for you. The blood test will provide more information than the home test.

5. The way forward
If the test is positive, the next step will be an ultrasound examination after 5 weeks (i.e. week 7 of pregnancy). If you live far away, we can refer you to have this done at a local gynecologist or at the nearest hospital. If the treatment is unsuccessful, you will be given advice and guidance on the way forward.
